What is international Education week?
I'm sure you've seen a growing number of national and international holidays, with an extremely diverse range in topics - fun fact, this past November 16th was actually International Check Your Wipers Day.
Although January 24th was International Education Day, there's also an International Education Week (IEW) every November. This year's IEW started on November 18th and will extend to the 22nd - a worldwide celebration of global education, cultural appreciation and multilingual exchange.
Launched in 2000 by the Institute of International Education (IIE), this year's theme of IEW is to embrace and explore the power of international education.
What's a better way to welcome the upcoming holiday seasons' themes of thankfulness, community, and peace on Earth than celebrating our world's cultural diversity and interconnection!
From 1949 to Now
Just yesterday, the Open Doors® Report on International Educational Exchange for the 2023/2024 academic year was released in order to kick off IEW! Celebrating its own 75th anniversary, the Open Doors Report has received support from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to release data on:
1.) International Students studying in the U.S.
2.) U.S. students studying abroad
3.) Global Student mobility trends
When Open Doors first began their reports in the 1948/49 academic year, there were 25,464 international students studying at almost 3,000 U.S. higher education institutions. In 2023/24, there were 1,126,690 international higher ed. students studying in the U.S. - a historic high!

What's Next?
Of the estimated 19 million higher education students, international students represent more than one million of them. The international programs and opportunities provided by the U.S. is not only an efficient way for countries to foster strong global connections and improve overall education.
It is also an important cultural and social connector, helping us to better understand and appreciate people from all walks of life with diverse experiences
“For the first time in the history of our Open Doors survey, the U.S. may stand alone in the world in terms of our willingness and capacity to host more international students,” said Allan E. Goodman, the CEO of the IIE.
Take pride in our educational diversity and never stop learning.

“The world is for our students to explore”
– Secretary Miguel Cardona, U.S. Department of Education
